Our Mission

The Niobrara Valley Prescribed Fire Association supports the safe and effective use of prescribed fire by private landowners within the Niobrara River drainage area of Nebraska.

Our History

Since the middle of the 2000’s more and more landowners have realized the struggle to keep ahead of invading eastern red cedar by mechanical means was becoming a huge challenge. A few ranchers in the Niobrara Valley . . .

Welcome!

The Niobrara Valley Prescribed Fire Association is comprised of landowners and others interested in using prescribed fire as a means of controlling eastern red cedar, decreasing the abundance of of non-native cool-season grasses, and reducing wildfire danger in the Niobrara Valley watershed.

The NVPFA held a training burn on October 31 north of Johnstown. The 24-acre burn unit was rectangular and offered a “textbook” setting for using tools of the trade such as drip torches and pumper units. At right, NVPFA board member Al Steuter demonstrates using a drip torch.

Spring burning season is coming soon

Niobrara Valley landowners will conduct prescribed burns this winter and spring when weather conditions are suitable. These burns are conducted to manage habitat, control encroaching eastern red cedars, and set back cool-season grasses.

A demonstration/training burn is planned for about 1,500 acres, involving five landowners in Rock County on March 12, 2012.

The NVPFA administers two mobile fire cache units to assist landowner members with their burns. Each unit contains enough equipment and protective clothing for a 10-person crew.
